We’re buzzing! It was announced today that our fantastic Jo Dean is a finalist for the Bradford Sports Awards 2020 in the Outstanding Volunteer category (http://www.activebradford.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/17430_BSA_Finalists_A4_VIS01.pdf). She’s up against a netballer and a footballer and will find out if she’s won on 12th March at the Awards Dinner. She says she’ll be wearing her Life of a Bee badges with pride! Huge congratulations Jo! We’re so proud of you.

And this is the citation: Jo lives and breathes Bingley Bees Hockey Club and exemplifies everything we love about our club. She meets all the criteria: born and living in the area, she trains and represents the club. She has been a member since a junior and, apart from time out to have her daughters (both now Bees themselves), has played continuously, passing 30 years last season and becoming our youngest Honorary Member (‘Bumblebee’!) in her early forties. She has been Junior Coordinator for almost a decade, taking our ‘Minibee’ section from strength to strength: junior members now comprise half the membership of our small friendly Bees Family; five teams compete in the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League; she engages and informs parents/carers through personal contact, Facebook posts following every training and tournament, Whatsapp groups and by her dedication to turning out every week; most importantly, our Minibees love their hockey! Leading a small supporting team of club members and parents, she commits almost all of every weekend to hockey through the season, plus weekly junior and senior training and large amounts of unseen admin, all with enthusiasm, positivity and patience. Aside from her Junior Coordinator role, she is concurrently part of the Ladies’ selection/captaining team, Welfare Officer (female) and kit secretary (sourcing us the ‘best socks in the league’ last season!). She had no idea about this nomination, thinking the accompanying video was being made to showcase the club, not her! The video illustrates why we consider Jo Dean a Queen Bee.
Here’s what she’s just said on her public post: “So excited to be able to share this with you. Was a complete shock and wow moment when I got the email saying I’d been shortlisted for the Bradford Sports Awards in the volunteer category by Bingley Bees Hockey Club. The undercover stories used to get the video that went with the wonderful words written about me has really made me laugh and now makes much more sense 🤣.
Thank you to my Bees Family for putting me forward for this award. I’m already a winner being part of such a great club from the youngest to the oldest…I’m nearly there! And the rewards I get back far outweigh the time given especially as my own mini bees love the club as much as I do. Jess said to me this morning, ‘Mum, it’s your fault I love hockey so much.’
